Cultivation & Distillation of Italian Lavender
Lavender oil is a tireless workhorse, perfect for everyday use while potent enough to induce calm and gentle feelings. There’s more to the cultivation and processing of this model herb than meets the eye. Lavender boasts different species and hybrids, all varying in quality, while climate and soil type play a role too.
The Ohm Collection has chosen to work with Lavandula angustifolia, which is not a conventionally grown, sterile hybrid called Lavandin. Lavandula angustifolia is known as a “true” lavender, exuding more pronounced and spicy oils with enduring quality. Our lavender is also organically certified and grown in Bulgaria, with its dry Mediterranean climate and mineral-rich soils perfect for enhancing the plant’s brilliant scent.can sustain themselves.
The way lavender is distilled plays a role in determining its quality. Harvested in the morning when its oils are most concentrated, small batches undergo the time-intensive process of steam distillation. Unlike industrial extraction, steam distillation maintains temperatures below the normal boiling point, thereby protecting the lavender oil’s integrity. After more than 36 hours, the steam treatment results in an essential oil and water mixture – because oil and water are not soluble, the oil gets siphoned off and what remains gets turned into hydrosols!
